What is organizational behavioral risk?

Simply defined, risk is the possibility that a situation will occur and negatively impact the achievement of organizational objectives.

Lawsuits cost US businesses $105 billion in 2008 (Nera/USCILR)
37% of the US workforce report being bullied at work (WBI)

Behavioral risks lurk in every corner of an organization and can wreak havoc on productivity and morale. Whether it’s related to departmental silos, teams stuck in interpersonal drama, or ineffective management styles, organizations usually wait for a crisis to occur before they tackle an issue head on.  There are many reasons for this:

  • Internal politics and culture
  • Discomfort with conflict
  • Management/staff not trained in problem solving
  • Human resources stretched in many directions
  • Goal directed managers keep conflict at bay until it becomes unbearable
  • It’s human nature to be reactive rather that proactive

How can these barriers be tackled?

It helps to create a plan to identify and manage these risks. A risk inventory strategy works well.  As a business leader or human resources professional, you evaluate each department and business function in the organization by asking these questions?

  • Are policies and practices in sync with organizational goals?
  • Do we need to add? Update? Where are the gaps?
  • What risks have highest priority? (people, places, things)
  • What are our resources?
  • How should senior management get involved?
  • Potential benefits in dollars and cents?
  • How will we define success?

Setting a course to identify and minimize workplace risks can be overwhelming at times.  That’s why ScimiaConsultingGroup’s training, coaching and consulting services are here to help.  Contact us anytime for a free consultation.
